Welcome to Year 6

Our Year 6 children are taught in two classes – Hawthorn and Hazel.

The teaching staff in Hawthorn class are: Mr Morris-Taylor, Mrs Blythe and Mrs Crookes.
The teaching staff in Hazel class are: Mrs Perryman and Mrs Coxhead.

Year 6 sees the children coming to the end of their primary education and provides many opportunities for them to shine and demonstrate everything they have learnt and achieved over that time.  In addition to completing statutory assessments, they are able to take on roles of Head and Deputy Head Boys and Girls, Prefects, House Captains, School Librarians and many other responsibilities in supporting the younger children in school.  Throughout the year, there are various events that enable every child to celebrate their own personal talents and skills, including a challenging Activity Week and the end of year show.

Year 6 children are required to undertake statutory assessments (SATs) in May. These tests focus on: grammar, punctuation and spelling; reading comprehension; maths arithmetic and reasoning. Throughout the year, we will be revising these areas in class. The children will also be set revision style homework, which will help them to recall previously taught areas of their learning. It would be highly beneficial for children to complete the tasks set (1 grammar sheet; 1 spelling sheet; 3 Mathletics tasks), read regularly and continue to rehearse their times tables. Homework is set on a Friday and should be returned the following Friday, to be marked in class. This gives children who have busy week days, time to complete their homework at the weekend if necessary. Children who read three or more times per week will be awarded Bookworms, which are drawn ‘raffle style’ with book prizes. Additional homework support is offered on request, and homework catch-up sessions are provided on Fridays.

Our PE slots this year will be on Tuesday and Thursday (Hawthorn) and Wednesday and Friday (Hazel), so children will need to come to school prepared for their sessions in their PE kit with appropriate footwear. Children will need personal water bottles in school each day.

We will continue to build on the positive attitudes to learning developed in earlier year groups, by understanding that mistakes are essential in order to progress as a learner. This growth mindset principle focusses on the fact that our brain is a muscle and we have to build that muscle over time, just as we would any other muscle in our body. We often discuss how we may not be able to do something yet, but we can get better at things over time and with practice. This is also reflected in our school values, which we often refer to in class. It would be greatly appreciated if you could help to reinforce this message at home, particularly when supporting your child with their homework. This is something we are really passionate about instilling in the children as this positive outlook will help them to build their independent learning skills.
