Fairford Primary School

Olive Class

Welcome to Year 3

In Year 3, we teach children how to become responsible and independent learners. There are exciting challenges awaiting Olive class as they embark on Stone Age mysteries, marvel in their own mathematic achievements and so much more as they flourish in Olive Lodge. Of course it is important that we have LOTS of fun as we learn, and we have some exciting topics to help us do so as well as a range of engaging subjects to broaden our knowledge! We are surrounded by lots of green space and this year we hope to fundraise in order to create a garden that can be enjoyed by everyone in the school. Throughout Year 3 we aim to collaboratively learn, share and explore the world around us.

Our Teaching Staff

The teaching staff in Olive class are: Miss Sim, Mrs Hill, Mrs Field and Miss Pergusey.

PE sessions are Wednesdays and Thursdays each week. Please send your child to school in their kit on these days.

Children are allowed to bring a ‘reading for pleasure’ book into school and this is encouraged! If any parents would like to help out in Olive by hearing our readers, we’d love to hear from you!

In Year 2, your child will have learnt their 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables and all children should continue to practice those alongside their new Year 3 times tables. TTRockstars is a great website to ‘rock on’ with multiplication and division facts!

Homework is set on a Friday and should be returned the following Friday (this gives children who have busy weekdays time to complete it over the weekend if necessary). Each child will have a Reading Record in which they should record their reading at home, and this should be brought into school each day in their book bag. These Records should be handed in on Fridays, so that we can ensure children are meeting the minimum expectation of reading at home at least 3 times a week and award Bookworms to those that have met, or exceeded, this requirement. Children should take responsibility for changing their reading books when they are finished. Additional English and Maths activities will alternate each week, in line with our homework policy.

Growth Mindset

Throughout this year, we will be putting a lot of focus on developing a growth mindset. This principle focusses on the fact that our brain is a muscle and we have to build that muscle over time, just as we would any other muscle in our body. We often discuss how we may not be able to do something yet, but we can get better at things over time and with practice. It would be greatly appreciated if you could help to reinforce this message at home, particularly when supporting your child with their homework. This is something we are really passionate about instilling in the children as this positive outlook will help them to build their independent learning skills.

Children in Year 3 will need:

– A Water bottle.
– A pair of wellies so we can maximise our opportunities for outdoor activities.

Please make sure that every item is labelled with your child’s name.
