Maths

We Are Mathematicians!

At Fairford, we firmly believe every child can achieve in maths. It is our intention to inspire an enjoyment of maths and implement a ‘can do’ attitude towards solving problems and challenges to have a positive impact on outcomes for every child.

"It makes my brain work!"

"We work together to solve tricky problems."

At Fairford, maths is set in the context of real life situations appropriate to children at their stage of learning. Activities are then skilfully designed to highlight misconceptions and provide intelligent practice (using concrete, pictorial or abstract resources) until children feel confident to independently apply their understanding to unfamiliar and progressively challenging tasks.

We celebrate maths throughout the year with such activities as Maths Week, where our older children support our younger children in applying their maths knowledge through games and puzzles. Visitors share the importance of resilience and the future opportunities that maths can offer. Children explore and embed the mantra, “I can’t do it YET!” as they continue to improve their effort in their daily maths activities.

"I like it a bit hard because it makes me think a bit more."

Our consistent approach to the teaching and learning of maths throughout school means that children feel confident that they will be supported and have the resources necessary to be successful in their maths journey at Fairford.
